Coleman's innocence was debated only in the news media and considerable doubt concerning his guilt went with him to his execution."

The "considerable doubt" was that (1) he never confessed; (2) there was another person who had the opportunity to commit the crime (but no motive and no evidence to implicate that person); (3) his family and friends thought he was great guy.

He refused his own lawyers' urging to take a lie detector test, until the day before his execution ... and then he flunked.
