Or perhaps it is because they have Macs, and thus have no other choice? Do you really think Apple has the corner on 1.25 HDs? As I keep saying, any company can build an iPod-like device if they see it is worthwhile.

you mean any company can COPY apple if they want, fortunately apple has gotten better in their paper work, so they sue if the thing is a little bit too close to what they are coping... and apple actually wins these suits now that they know how to write contracts and patents and the paperwork...

witness e-machines.... or who ever it was, they copy it, they get sued, they have to pull it off the market, and then come out with something else that people look at and go... egad, is that ugly... and don't buy it....

Steven -

Mac users do have a choice. They can certainly buy other MP3 devices. Macs have USB ports, too. I'm sure many Mac owners have MP3 players other than the iPod.

And of course some other company could make an iPod-like device, using a 1.25" HD. But they haven't yet. Really, I'm not interested in whether or not Apple's products can compete with Knock-Offs from the Future. I'm only interested in seeing them make great products that sell well at a good profit margin.

If and when there is some sort of truly competitive product at a better price, Apple might have to lower iPod prices. Right now they are selling as many as they can make, even though you consider the price point too high.
