But then the question is - what plants do we keep? Surely you wouldn't suggest we need all of them. What about the fact that they can't compete? Could that imply that they can't compete on quality as well as price? If that were to be the case then we are exposed already due to the quality gap. Should the military have its' own state of the art steel plant in that case? If they were to do that then the rest of us could enjoy the cheaper and better steel from abroad.

I never found what I'm talking about in a textbook(or if I did, it was short thrifted), and it is too very bad indeed. I'm talking about real world cause and effect which can't be repealed by protectionism.

You could vote for protectionism for reasons of war, and still admit that it always causes its own harm when implemented.
