A lot of people that post here have never worked in an engineering or computer development environment, that's obvious. They think that because someone puts it on a foil for this performance at that date, it will happen. They have no idea what a huge job it is to get a product as complex as these out the door successfully. AMD still has a huge amount left to do on the Hammers. Anyone that says or implies that it's anything remotely close to in the bag for Q4, for example, for Hammer to launch, is dreaming.

This is so true! These people who wouldn't know a netlist from fishing line have bought Jerry's hype hook line and sinker. A foil is a product! The work involved in getting even a simple product out the door is enormous. Anyone who has been through a product development cycle knows the work involved and the ease with which they buy this hype is a testament to their inexperience, naivety and gullibility.

This is not to say that Hammer will not live up to claims. Anything is possible. Just the chances are remote.

Tony,

They have no idea what a huge job it is to get a product as complex as these out the door successfully.

What do you mean by "these"? There was some talk about servers. Is that what you mean?

AMD still has a huge amount left to do on the Hammers. Anyone that says or implies that it's anything remotely close to in the bag for Q4, for example, for Hammer to launch, is dreaming.

What is scheduled for Q4 2002 is a single processor desktop CPU called ClawHammer. Are you saying that expecting Clawhammer based desktops in Q4 2002 is dreaming?

The other stuff that we have been talking about - servers is scheduled to follow later in 2003. Especially Sledgehammer, and > 1 processor motherboards / systems.

Joe

I think most of us understand the challenges of complex technical developments. What you are ignoring is that AMD have already moved the date out by a year. If you have experience of development then you know that if you have to move a date then you make damn sure there is enough contingency that (barring disasters) you will make the revised date.

I don't think it is unrealistic to believe that AMD, who is currently shipping Hammer samples, has a reasonable idea of when they can produce final silicon.
