That's true, but today's testing, validation, Q/A tools are not not standing still. If anything, it seems to me that these days, the shrinks, core revisions, steppings and even new cores are being released as fast if not faster that a decade ago.

Of course things can go terribly wrong, when the whole management loop can breaks down (case in point Merced), or thngs are delayed, resulting in potentially great product turning out to be barely average (because of delays) as competition catches up.

But if listened carefully, there was a huge sigh of relief on this thread, when AMD showed a
- Hammer silicon
- silicon being .13u SOI variety
- running both 64 and 32 bit OSs
- on a motherboard with a functioning chipset
These were really the big unknowns. There is a lot left, that's true, but the range of estimates has narrowed substantially.
