Scott, we are in agreement on the nonsense of hailing AMAT's split announcement as being some kind of bullish indicator. The last three AMAT splits occurred at or near major tops.

Note also, from the first link, that half of AMAT's splits have occurred when the pre-split stock price was below $40, so in the long run it is not unusual for it to be splitting at its current price level.
