Make no mistake, I'm not a fan of Arafat and if he suddenly had a brain aneurism and died I wouldn't mourn for him. But when you say violence escalated after Sept. 11, I say violence escalated when Sharon paraded himself at a mosque in Jerusalem in 2000 as prelude to his entry into the Israeli leadership race. As I say, he is a master at creating a situation on the ground that plays out politically to his advantage. ie provoking arabs at a mosque in 2000 and in the last two weeks with Israel's largest military foray (into occupied territory)since Lebanon. I've been accused of being naive, but come on, wasn't it naive to think there would not be a Palestinian response to Sharon's tactics of the last two weeks prior to Zinni's arival in the region.
