It's tough reading all the articles you post Frank. Just a comment about this one.

If the government does not take tough measures Dr. Fukao envisages an eventual run on the banks as domestic investors finally lose confidence and scurry to gold, foreign currency and real estate.

I really don't know much about Japan's government, but unless there's been a big change there, like there has been in the U.S. with Bush, the likelihood is they will stay the course and not take the tough measures needed. I also hope he's right about the result, but wonder what real estate they might find undervalued and not hampered by excessive debt. Although he mentioned FDR, the 'Fiddler' as I call him, he didn't mention the 'Ditherer' as I call Slick Willy. I think they're still in the dithering phase and if they do try the massive government intervention he's calling for, chances are good they would get it wrong, and massively wrong! The only solution they're not talking about right now so it might be unexpected is to make gold illegal. As the U.S. was then, they are this time the creditor nation.

Just a couple of thoughts FWIW

Bob

Forcing people out of conservative savings and into the stock market is insane.... Punishing people for saving instead of speculating in the stock market is one of the nuttiest things I have ever heard! Time for The Yogi to have a discussion with Dr. Fukao....
