I doubt if the report got to Ashcroft but it makes no difference. The Black Caucus considers him to be so "racist" that he would be blamed for any position he took on it. We have got to the point in this country that being a fervent "Evangelical Christian" is considered to be a bar against holding office by the left. I have no more use for a "Witch Doctor" than I do for a "Tribal Chief", but I think that this has attitude gone too far.

Hmm, interesting conversation, Bill. I have no problem making it as difficult as possible for anyone who is a racist from getting into positions of public trust. As for Ashcroft, I thought the evidence that he had been such offered at his confirmation hearings was fairly substantial and fairly convincing. Whether he still is, I don't know.

As for the fate of that report, my own guess was that when it came back, it landed at fairly low levels in the justice department. Those folk said something on the order of--what can we do with this thing. If we release it, they'll say there we go again--we are racists. If we don't, we are hiding something. So they bumped it upstairs. And here's where I think it got dumb. If Ashcroft saw it and said hold onto it, that was dumb. If he saw it and kept putting off dealing with it, that was dumb. And if someone just below him thought he was too busy to be bothered, that was dumb.

That's what I meant by dumb. And I would certainly not argue that a dem administration would do any better on this score.
