Apache Sets '02 Capital Spending Budget At $590 Million Versus 1.4 Billion

WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- Apache Corp. (NYSE: APA - news) (APA) expects to spend $590 million on capital spending in 2002, below the $1.4 billion it spent in 2001, according to the company's annual report released Friday by the Securities and Exchange Commission.

The company said the spending cut was required during a period of volatile natural gas prices and a faltering U.S. economy.

The spending is budgeted worldwide for exploratory and development drilling, the filing said.

Apache said it plans to use any excess cash to reduce debt until it decides either to increase drilling spending should the commodity price improve, or to pursue acquisition opportunities if they become available.

The Houston company is an oil and gas exploration and development company.
