Gold gaining on weak yen
3/22/02 12:22 PM ET

Gold is up $3.50 per ounce and is now at a 2 1/2 week high ($296.60). The strength is likely tied to renewed weakening in the Japanese yen--the correlation between gold and the yen has been fairly tight recently. For example, the 2002 high in gold was set on February 8th, the very same day that the yen ended a rapid decline, reaching 134.71 versus the U.S. dollar (132.9 currently). With the Japanese fiscal year ending at month's end, and new limits on bank deposits set to take effect on April 1st, investors should keep an eye on the yen, gold, and Japanese bank stocks.
