Deep down, you love the pig and you have a slim glimmer of hope in the overall prospects. Admit it. It's that whole Love/Hate thing.

CPQ making a nice turn here. Could close green.

Ya know El, the Captain is starting to look like a rocket scientist here, dumping out at 35 and 30 as he did, BUT, I am starting to see hints of success:

1. It looks after all is said and done, that Carly and Mike were smart enough to count the votes 6 months ago. I believe before the merger announcement they went thru the what if if Walt and the boys didn't vote for the deal. THAT is damn good strategic planning.

2. These people are Yuppies, and as much as I hate Yuppies, they SEEM TO BE DOING the one thing that Yuppies Don't do. They are taking action, they are moving like greased lightning.

3. In the PC sector, this means FAR less undercutting prices at the retail PC level. Plus vastly increasing the efficiency of the distribution network by shipping fewer different types of PC and more printers, right with the PC's.

Sort of ...Bundling Rules!!!!!

The proof of the pudding will be how effective they are in the midrange market and I have expressed my thoughts on that, and rude is withholding judgment.

BUT THINGS COULD BE WORSE.

They could have broadened the service initiative, not by merging, but by acquiring Arthur Andersen. :))

Dear El: You are more courageous than I! Like you, I wish I had the courage to switch out of CPQ. Unlike you, I'd be moving the money into something VERY conservative (and boring)-- bitty, local bank stocks, like BMTC, NPBC, and HNBC. Heck, I'm even starting to like WB (ex-First Union)!

NPBC has really been behaving unusual lately. It's been hitting yearly highs all month on much higher than usual volume. Today, it's traded twice it's usual volume already. Normally, the daily volume tracks the volume of the other two stocks (higher than usual--or lower--volume in one, same volume trend in the other two). Today, the other 2 stocks are both below average daily volume.

HNBC has been paying a yearly special stock dividend (5%) lately and there are more than enough outstanding, unissued shares for another 5% this autumn. Yesterday I received a proxy. The board wants to increase shares from 30M to 75M. Hummm...

I'll tell you one thing. These rarely-is-there-news boring banks sure do look nice on Yahoo!'s detailed quote page lately. Market down? Most of them up or flat.

Geez. CPQ/HW, CPQ--whatever--better get on track soon. It's down-right unhealthy for someone my tender age to get excited about bank stocks.
