Most jokes which aren't puns or slapstick are offensive to someone, or some class or group of people... I can even tolerate anti-Brit jokes, provided only that they're funny - that's happened twice now <g>

But the purpose of a joke often isn't to unify - it is exactly to strengthen the 'us' bond against 'them'. Whether that's desirable is a different matter. The funniness of the joke is also only loosely related, IMO...
