"The Plot to Sieze the White House", by Jules Archer

While we're discussing history of high-level corruption of the White House and government by business, vis Bush Inc.

(BTW, does anyone know where I can get this book?
It seems to have been "removed" from libraries and isn't available in any used bookstores I've found so far)

eclectica.org

another summary of that era:

THE BUSINESS PLOT TO OVERTHROW ROOSEVELT

"The plotters attempted to recruit General Smedley Butler to lead the coup. They selected him because he was a war hero who was popular with the troops. The plotters felt his good reputation was important to make the troops feel confident that they were doing the right thing by overthrowing a democratically elected president. However, this was a mistake: Butler was popular with the troops because he identified with them. That is, he was a man of the people, not the elite. When the plotters approached General Butler with their proposal to lead the coup, he pretended to go along with the plan at first, secretly deciding to betray it to Congress at the right moment.

What the businessmen proposed was dramatic: they wanted General Butler to deliver an ultimatum to Roosevelt. Roosevelt would pretend to become sick and incapacitated from his polio, and allow a newly created cabinet officer, a "Secretary of General Affairs," to run things in his stead. The secretary, of course, would be carrying out the orders of Wall Street. If Roosevelt refused, then General Butler would force him out with an army of 500,000 war veterans from the American Legion. But MacGuire assured Butler the cover story would work:
"You know the American people will swallow that. We have got the newspapers. We will start a campaign that the President's health is failing. Everyone can tell that by looking at him, and the dumb American people will fall for it in a second…"
The businessmen also promised that money was no object: Clark told Butler that he would spend half his $60 million fortune to save the other half.

And what type of government would replace Roosevelt's New Deal? MacGuire was perfectly candid to Paul French, a reporter friend of General Butler's:
"We need a fascist government in this country… to save the nation from the communists who want to tear it down and wreck all that we have built in America. The only men who have the patriotism to do it are the soldiers, and Smedley Butler is the ideal leader. He could organize a million men overnight."

A Prayer For The Dying

By Marc Ash

I cry for CIA agent Johnny Spann. When I saw the jetliners tear into the fully occupied office buildings in
downtown Manhattan, "I" wanted somebody-to-do-something. Johnny Spann was that somebody, and it cost him his
life. I cry for the Fire Fighters who not only gave their lives so that others might live -- but that others did live. I cry
for the more than three thousand New Yorkers lying buried beneath the ruins of the world trade center, their bodies
still not recovered. I cry for all of the human beings on all the flights and in the Pentagon murdered by cowards.

And then I look at the courtyard of the fort at Mazar-e-Sharif, men butchered with their hands tied behind their
backs, bodies ransacked, dismembered, savaged, and brutalized in a manner that none of us would have the
strength to face. And I pray for the family of man.

Never forget, we created Osama bin Laden. It was our military intelligence that financed, backed and trained this
madman -- and that was madness. If fools truly "rush in," we are truly fools. Less than a decade had passed since
the fall of Saigon, when willy-nilly, headlong we dashed off to cross swords with the "Red Menace" in Afghanistan.
Another distant ancient land torn apart so that our liberty might be protected. Today we collaborate with that "Red
Menace" and your liberty is in John Ashcroft's hip pocket.

We blame "the Nazis" for Germany's crimes against humanity, but the real blame lies with the good Germans,
the ones who sat back and said; "maybe it's all for the best."
They were not the ones who conducted the roundups,
not the ones who pulled the triggers, not the ones who attended the exterminations; they were the ones who kept
their eyes closed and said, "maybe its all for the best."

I am George W. Bush, we are all George W. Bush, he is the ugly American in all of us and we had better get that
ugly American under control quickly. Say a prayer for the US service men and women in harm's way fighting for
America, they could sure use it right about now, but at the same time please also say a prayer for the dying.
