Hi John:

An easy question with a difficult answer.

For a beginning research standpoint its best to do some reading on this trhead and the releated links

Subject 17781

Well in fiber channel switches BRCD is #1 in market share and marketing with the 1g low port (16 and less). The industry is now rolling out the 2 gig swithc products with the director class (64 and 128 port size) being the top end.

My comment was more on the technology side and as we've seen in the past good marketing and sales can overcome some technology issues.

Actually with BRCD one has to be cautious about the MCDTA suit. I understand MCDTA has 6 or 7 patents in the storage area to BRCD's 1 and MCDTA has a broad cross licensing agreement with EMC and IBM. If BRCD loses the patent suit their new switches would fall too far off on the technology side to be overcome by good sales / marketing.

BRCD has the 2 gig low port switches (32 and less) but its behind the curve on the higher port sizes. QLGC offers a better price on the low end (i.e. its selling for less than the BRCD products) but QLGC has indicated the difficulty of making an inroad with OEMs that have established relationship (i.e. BRCD with its 90% market share is difficult to unseat).

This is all from reading as I don't work with any of this stuff and some of the articles can be biased one way or the other.

Anyway I purchased some MCDTA yesterday @ 12. EMLX and QLGC are still above where I sold them last fall.

BRCD should be fine as long as they don't lose the patent suit by MCDTA. MCDTA, EMLX & QLGC should be fine through this upgrade cycle (maybe next 2 to 5 years).

They can all be in trouble if ethernet can be used in storage (its been talked about for the 2+ years I've been following this area and its still only being talked about).

EMLX can also run into trouble unless it expands its product offering.

Hope this helps.

Tim
