I was lucky that particular day - there were others who weren't so lucky. We saw 3 boats with blown out sails and one with a broken mast. On one, the jib (the front sail) was split horizontally with the upper half stuck and flapping madly in the wind. On another, the main sail was in shreds but still giving forward power. They had to crash into the dock to stop the boat. Very expensive afternoon for those folks. That afternoon, the small craft warning flag (one red one) turned into 2 (gale force). Glad I made the decision to come back in.
