I'm sure America wants Arafat to go to the Arab conference, and it would be very foolish IMO for Sharon to prevent it.

If Arafat doesn't go the Arabs will say they can't make peace when Sharon holds the Palestinian leader captive - they can't even talk to him.

With Arafat there the pressure is on them to come up with something. Obviously the Saudis can't deliver full diplomatic relations with all the Arab states - Syria, Iraq, Iran...?

But something like the end of hostilities of the Arab states against Israel could lead to a breakthrough settlement. If the Arab states don't come up with anything reasonable, then the U.S. & Israel have at least made the effort. By gritting their teeth and not retaliating for the latest suicide bombings, the Israelis have made it clear that Israeli escalation doesn't cause the terrorism - it goes on regardless, and in the face of the American peacekeeper. A very good and smart move on their part IMO.

The U.S. may be doing what some were saying about Sharon - moving left (the Zinni, Cheney visits, pressure on Israel to pull back) and simultaneously right (letting Syria etc. know that our top priority is destroying anti-Western civilization terrorists, and we're getting a bit fed up with them.)

The excuses for being a traitor start:

WASHINGTON -- Claiming John Walker Lindh was a soldier, not a terrorist, his attorneys presented new details Friday of his initial weeks in captivity and said the traumatized young prisoner cooperated with the FBI only in the hope of ending mistreatment by U.S. authorities
