I'm with you Stephen. Canadians should refuse to buy US made wine, beer, and liquor. This sort of retaliation should begin at the grassroots level. We don't need the government to lead this initiative.

US slaps Canada with stiff lumber tariff

news.bbc.co.uk

American homebuilders denounced the US
decision, saying it would harm consumers by
making homes less affordable.

"If the entire 29% border duties are reflected in
US prices, this will add nearly $1,500 to the cost
of building a typical new home," said Bobby
Rayburn, a homebuilder in Jackson, Mississippi.

Mr Rayburn, who also serves on the National
Association of Home Builders, says the US
government's calculations for determining
Canada's forest-industry subsidy were imprecise.

"Independent trade
panels have reviewed
Canada's timber pricing
on three separate
occasions," Mr Rayburn
said.

"In each case... it was
ultimately determined
that the Canadian
government did not
provide unfair
subsidies."

In my opinion the American dollar is too high priced to be competitive in price with products produced in foreign markets who have a lower labor unit cost. Tariffs will increase the prices of foreign goods as well as decrease US exports on a global base.

I do not believe you can compare the history of the British Empire or any other Empire to this time frame we live in. Our time frame includes Instant Communication which allows easy access to information.

I believe that in each period of history the so called Powers that were or be had one advantage that was more knowledge. That knowledge was used to increase their own worth. This accidently gave others the knowledge that would equip them with the necessary tools that lead to revolt.

<I say that America wants to charge too much for it's raw logs and to generate obscene profits for land owners.>

Well, I have a place very close to lots of logging out in BC and the scuttlebut from my 'eco-friends' is that the state land is left in there during and after logging abolutley cannot happen in the states... Just what I hear.

>> The losers will be the American consumer... <<

so like most everyone else, you are saying that tariffs hurt the american consumer. since you obviously seem opposed to hurting the american consumer, you must be opposed to all tariffs.

that is the shallowness of the argument. we can never, ever, impose tariffs because it's bad for consumers. well let me tell you something, for well over a century in the united states tariffs were the majority source of revenues to the federal government. somehow consumers managed just fine. maybe it was because there was no income tax and the government didn't pick people's pockets, so they actually got to keep 100% of their paycheck, instead of dutifully handing over much of our income to our master slaveowners at the i.r.s.

there is a simple answer to this shallow argument. the income tax harms consumers. having the government pick your pockets before you even get a chance to cash your paycheck means you are a slave. you have no choice in the matter, congress decides if and when they want to "give" us back some of our own money, which is really money they confiscated from us in the first place.

where are all the outcries about the income tax and how injurious that is to consumers?!?!? oh i see. mostly only wealthy consumers are hurt by the income tax, the freeloaders in our society hardly pay any income taxes. no wonder they scream bloody murder when they are going to actually have to contribute to our country for once by sharing some of the burden.
