I was an avionics engineer at one time. I use filters in the design of instruments. Now when I construct models to measure market strengths, I also put in filters. Old habits. There are two filters in my Market Timing Model, a light filter and a heavy filter. The heavy filter removes changes less than 1.0. The light filter removes changes less than 0.5. Which filter to use depends on the VIX (usually). When the VIX is low the heavy filter is employed. When the VIX is high the light filter is on. And I can change the filter.
