I had a very odd feeling while I was typing those last few posts. It struck me that I could have been talking about appeasing Arafat. I started describing my line of thought about Hitler to my husband, but before I could mention Arafat, he jumped in and said it sounded like I was talking about Palestine!

So you've noticed a certain similarity in thought patterns and behavior? The Israelis have also noticed. Claim large but not impossible demands, negotiate with your rational, liberal, opponent, and get half your demands for free before you start your war. Meantime, build up your armed forces as fast as you can. It worked for Hitler, didn't it?

There is in fact a direct line of inheritance; Arafat is following the behavior patterns of the Mufti, who was an ardent Nazi and admirer of Hitler. Arafat also likes to float rumors that he is the Mufti's nephew, btw.

Incidentally, some historians give the Mufti considerable credit for Hitler's Final Solution, saying that Hitler was contemplating driving most of the Jews in Europe into Palestine until the Mufti convinced him this would only create a Jewish state and urged him to exterminate them instead.
