Ralph, >>If I enter it'll probably be through a fund.

I invest some of my daughters IRA funds in HQH and continue to add positions when it gets sold off. Have been impressed with the managers of this fund. They have a nice mix of stocks with potential new drugs, pick and shovel stocks, warrants, investments in private issues, etc. For example last year they paid a dividend of over $3 a share. It is nice for her since she has 20 years to retirement and we reinvest the dividends. The bio tech area seems to be the only sector, at least that I can think of, where we will see growth in the foreseeable future.

Just dabble lightly in the bio tech area with my personal funds, will trade in and out when the positions get cheap and overpriced. Been lucky so far - just had one go to zero during the last 15 years.

BTW, I did buy a starter position in Merck recently. Don't know if this was smart or not, but the fundamentals look good. Using Buffett's guidance for evaluation I get an intrinsic value of $126 (using the 6% long bond as the deflator) and after tax returns for the next ten years of between 9% and 18%. Have not been able to figure out what the Merck Medco spin off is going to mean to the company. Their debt is rated AAA, which is hard to find these days. <g>

Maybe someone on this thread could verify my Merck evaluation numbers.
