Ralph, Re: gold.

Was accumulating these stocks starting early in 2000 and have core positions with a low cost bases. IMO, it is worth it for me to keep this core position because of the dividends.

Just started buying trading positions on the last sell off. GOLD cleared a high on Friday, but GOLD was a laggard relative to HGMCY so don't know what to think of this one. HGMCY did not get though the recently high so their must be some folks taking profits. I do not think the XAU is a good predictor of these stocks since they are not big hedgers and the XAU has silver stocks plus hedgers as components.

Rambling here ... memories of the days of Iomega, Microsoft, Adobe, Etc. <ggg>

Ralph, an observation and a question.

Observation: The charts of the gold miners don't suggest to me that they are "at or near the top of this short-term cycle". Many bull flags and cups and handles were resolved this week with breakouts. But, I know just enough about TA to be dangerous and anything can happen, of course.

Question: Outside of gold, where would you plan to take refuge from the quite possible fallout when the fragile state of our "modern financial system" is exposed? I like the foreign bond funds talked about on this thread, but am always looking for other ideas.

FWIW, I've been trading a portion of my way overweight position in the miners, and sometimes monetizing profits after 30%+ moves. Have you thought of rotating some of your positions into laggards? NEM, for example, may be the premier miner who has just arrived to the party. I've enjoyed great returns employing this rotation strategy over the last few years.

You might also consider the relatively microscopic aggregate market caps of the miners and the abundance of liquidity presently on the prowl.

Silver also looking quite interesting.

My bottom line is that I need the insurance. Thus, while the profits thusfar have been tremendous, I will remain overweight in the gold miners.....At least until I feel that much of the crap has been cleansed from the financial system. Has that process even started yet?

Regards,
