People have always done that. I remember people doing it at my parents dinner parties- people who are now dead. And I remember people doing it in college- people my own age. I think it is a function of not being able to see ideas as separate from people. If you are a relativist people aren't bad or good because of their ideas, or for any other reason- they just are. They may be unlikable to one personally, because of choices they make about ideas, but they aren't inherently bad or good. But most people think there ARE bad and good ideas- absolutely. And clearly (to them) good people choose "good ideas" (read- those ideas they think are good) and "bad people" choose bad ideas (read: those ideas they don't like).
