Porsche - Apple = Stupid Analogy
The problem with the small Mac market share is getting developer and hardware vendor support. Mac's require different software applications and drivers.

ya, the problem with Porsche is they require non typical special tools to work on a Porsche... and special plastic materials that no one else uses..... you know the "software" that is formed to make components.....

a "software" that they had to develop new methods for because no one else is doing it........

with such a small market share, how can they get by with so many non typical mass market components and raw materials?

i think Porsche will be gone in a year......

erntheburn.tripod.com

after reading this, how could anyone think that they could make any money selling these cars to such a small market?????

try going to your local auto parts store and picking up some of these materials and components.....

get a clue Don, they've been saying the same thing about apple for at least 10 years..... yet apple keeps selling computers with non typical software and non typical hardware...

jon.

Porsche may have a small over all market share but it still uses the same unleaded gas as my truck and the same oil and transmission fluid and the profit margin on Porsche accessories and parts is high enough for small car part makers to stay in business by catering to Porsche owners.

Two points in response:

(1) You are suggesting that it would somehow be better for Apple if Mac software developers simply charged more for their wares. If Microsoft Office for OS X were to cost $1000 rather than $500, that would be GOOD for Apple? Bzzzt.

(2) Assuming that the analogy to Porsche parts is software, the best of the major apps either get ported to Macs, or were written on Macs and ported to Windows. Witness Photoshop, Premiere, Office, Illustrator, Internet Explorer, Director, etc. Many others are on Macintosh only, like FCP, iMovie, iDVD, DVD Studio Pro, iPhoto, iTunes, and iPod. And still more are just standard clients for Internet protocols, and there are numerous application selections on both platforms for FTP, email, web-surfing, IRC, etc.

Your thesis is simply unsupported by fact.
