You are an utter moron. Vietnam is begging to trade with us. I have colleagues who go there regularly on trade normalization trips. Ironically, they want us now more than ever. When a friend of mine and my brother in law were there last year, they played a round of golf, accompanied by Vietnamese women who were assigned to find balls that were lost in the rough -- they wouldn't let the players "waste time" looking for them.

Doing fine now without us?

You are absolutely, fantastically clueless. And fabricating, to make up for it.

I'm not so sure I disagree with you, Rich. Maybe we are both brainwashed. Kennedy and Johnson tried to foist off that domino theory on us. I think it was basically dishonest. They told us in ROTC that Viet Nam was strategically important because of where it is between the Indian and Pacific Oceans. That was the real reason we fought in Viet Nam, I think, but that was never told to the people in a way that they could believe. Kennedy and Johnson were inept in military matters. Along the way the flower children started their escapades. I'm ashamed of them, and of much of my generation that bought their cowardly line.

VIET NAM - IT'S THE OIL, STUPID!

rich4eagle,

Re: Viet Nam was a war postulated by America for our own selfish reasons and we failed, get over it. We must never again sacrifice 50.000 young American men in a cause that has no purpose. Domino Theory what a bunch of crap.

I beg to differ with you. The war had a very well defined purpose. It was to assume the colonial exploitation that the French were incapable of financing.

Here's an example. I have a neighbor who was a legal secretary in downtown San Francisco in 1964. She was in the conference room of a major law firm and typed up the final documents on an agreement that was reached between Standard Oil of California (now Chevron) and representatives of the French government, regarding certain exploration tracts for oil discovery in the near off-shore waters off Haiphong Harbor.

Those who are unfamiliar with history may not find this so anomalous. However, France ended its physical occupation of Viet Nam shortly after its defeat by indigenous forces at Dienbienphu in 1954. Soveign claims by France after that date are dubious legal fictions, to say the least. Furthermore, Haiphong was at least 200 miles above the DMZ and was unquestionably North Vietnamese territory in 1964, except to the most recalcitrant imperialists and big oil interests.

Add to that fiction of an agreement the infamous and deceitful Tonkin Gulf Resolution, and you have our involvement in Viet Nam as a complete fraud. Intended to continue and expand the resource exploitation of the previous era.

All talk about a Domino Theory was simply eyewash for a gullible and naive American populace.
