NP/Bloomberg say Kinross advances amid deal rumours

Mon 25 Mar 2002

Also Echo Bay Mines Ltd (ECO)
Also TVX Gold Inc (2) (TVX)
The National Post reports in its Saturday, March 23, edition that Kinross
Gold rose 7.7 per cent of 14 Canadian cents to $1.97 (Canadian) on Friday
on the Toronto Stock Exchange amid rumours the firm will acquire or merge
with two rivals, TVX Gold and Echo Bay Mines. A Bloomberg News dispatch to
the Post reports that Kinross has agreed to take an 11-per-cent stake in
Echo Bay in exchange for $25.9-million (U.S.) of debt and unpaid interest
that is was owed by the company as of Dec. 31. Unnamed investors say TVX,
with $61.9-million (U.S.) in cash and short-term investments, could be a
good fit with a combined Kinross and Echo Bay. Strathy Investment
Management analyst Philip Strathy says, "The rumour on those three is out
there." Bloomberg reports that Strathy Investment runs $300-million
(Canadian) for private clients and holds Kinross shares. Mr. Strathy says,
"Judging by the action in both stock today, the rumour appears to be well
received."
