Currencies preview: Traders look for US revival

Foreign exchange traders will be looking for further evidence of a strong revival in the US economy this week. The Conference Board consumer confidence index is expected to post a strong rise from February's figure of 94.1.

Durable goods orders for the US in February are forecast to rise by as much as 6 per cent on the month, boosted by a large order for Boeing.

But most economists see growth in the US far outstripping the figure for the eurozone in the first quarter.

The key issue for currency traders is whether this will help the dollar. So far, the dollar has failed to respond to strong economic figures.

Ray Attrill, director of research at the economic consultancy 4Cast, said, however, that this might be a temporary state of affairs. "We have had quite a serious sell-off in bonds as markets have adjusted to stronger growth," he said. "Once this adjustment is completed, the US should recover its appeal to overseas bond investors."
