"As an ebay consumer, I am wondering why PayPal is attractive. Does using PayPal make the transaction less secure for consumers? Is there any protection for fraud or misrepresentation of the goods?

I avoid using money orders or cashiers checks as I feel there is no recourse if something goes wrong.

I would appreciate your expert comment on this. "

Paypal in my opinion is the best processor for both the seller and buyer. Paypal offers fraud protection to both parties as long as the opposite party is verified. Meaning, if the seller is verified, the buyer is protected against fraud up to a certain dollar amount. The opposite is true too.

Paypal verifies a user by mailing a code using regular snale mail to the location given by the user. The user must then enter that code in their account. PO Boxes are not permitted. There is confirmation at least that this user is at that point in time living at that physical address.

Paypal has a few more perks. The funds are not transferred to the seller unless requested. One may provide a social security number and Paypal does pay money market rates which are very low now on funds in the account. Billpoint, now called eBay payments, does not. Ebay payments also automatically transfers each day's funds at the close of the business day. That can be a lot of banking fees if there are transaction fees for business use checking at their bank.

Finally, the user interface for Paypal is better. Ebay payments require an auction number and fills in the closing auction price. This number may not be edited. Paypal has a drop down menu to describe the reason for the funds. One is auction of course. Others are service, etc. The auction numbers, etc. are all optional.

There are really a few more advantages to paypal. If eBay payments were not as prevalent on the eBay site, I would not even take them. Since ebay owns them, one would be alienating many customers if that form of payment is refused.
