Because what happened in Texas is representative of the broad problem the Republican Party faces to expand its voter base. In this case, the state is Texas, but it also could be Florida, Illinois or California.

Here the GOP recruited an excellent Hispanic judge, got him elected to the state high court, got GWB and every major politician to endorse him, then he loses because, according to the writer, Republican voters were uninformed and voted for the guy with the good ol' boy name who ran on an English-first-and-always platform.

Boy, if I were a talented young Hispanic lawyer in Texas looking to get into politics, this would certainly encourage me to join the Republican Party.
