Re: "You don't even know if he ran an effective primary campaign ..."

As you well know, judicial elections in many states are different than "normal" elections. In these judicial elections, it's more often a case of "I'm the incumbent and I've been endorsed by so-and-so. I have a good bench record, so vote for me." It sounds that in this election, Steven Wayne Smith was smart to base his campaign on the fear factor. It won him the election. In some states, as you well know, judicial elections are simply approve/disapprove.

You can continue to attempt to minimize the damage done by the defeat of Xavier Rodriguez, but reasonable people will see this for what it is: a failure by the Republican Party to recruit and have qualified Hispanic candidates survive a primary election.

So the question becomes is this representative or non-representative of problems the Republican Party faces to recruit Hispanic candidates?

It's representative, of course. The bottom line is that those that voted in this judicial election likely didn't know much about either candidate and simply voted for the one whose last name most closely resembled their own.
