Exactly. It was forced. If you stay longer than 6 weeks, you're in, period. I stayed 5 weeks and 6 days, then worked passage on Vebeka Vesta, a 3,000 ton Danish freighter bound for Hull, England, to register at Draft Board 100. I turned 18 while going thru the straits of Gibraltar. Drunk wasn't the half of it... saw the porpoises ahead of the bow wave... threw up on the captain trying to wake me for my shift... great time was had by all. Gettin' misty here...
