When the land was sold to Jewish settlers, though, the tenants were evicted, with little or no warning.

I know the Jewish buyers often paid off the tenants as well, but I'm sure that didn't help much, especially as the fellahin were by tradition fatalists and improvident with money.

Of course, lots of Jewish purchases did not displace anybody as the effendi made a killing selling Jews all their worthless desert and swampland. Does anyone have an estimate as to how many were actually displaced by the land sales?

There was nothing illegal about this practice, but the scale on which it occurred made violence quite inevitable

I got the impression that organized violence did not really begin until the effendi began to feel their power threatened.
