Regardless, any depreciation can be used in the "Pro Forma" numbers Intel focuses on in its earnings reports.

When it comes to including one time earnings events like befitting from a spike in the Nasdaq, Intel is amazingly flexible. But if its costs that are involved, Intel suddenly reports that its hands are tied by the accounting rules, and it has no choice but to defer or hide those costs.

That's why they call it cooking the books.
