Longmont, Colorado, March 25 (Bloomberg) -- Applied Films Corp.'s shares fell 20 percent after the maker of thin film for flat-panel computer displays said it will have a fiscal third- quarter loss because it cut prices and customers canceled orders.

The shares fell $5.51 to $21.49. More than 3.6 million shares changed hands today, about 10 times the three-month daily average. Before today's decline, the shares had more than doubled in the past year.

Applied Films expects a loss of 7 cents to 12 cents a share in the quarter ending this month, it said in a statement. In January, the Longmont, Colorado-based company had forecast profit of 1 cent to 7 cents. Sales will be $30 million to $32 million, down from its previous forecast of $37 million to $41 million, the company said.

Sales were hurt by lower prices for coated-glass products and two canceled orders in the third quarter, the company said. On a conference call today, company executives declined to name the customers. A company in Taiwan canceled a purchase valued at $10 million to $20 million, Applied Films President and Chief Executive Thomas Edman said in the statement.
