But the seasonally adjusted three-month average increased by 1% compared with January, showing "the upward momentum in manufacturing output was maintained," the board said. In January, industrial production fell 11.4% on year, based on a three-month moving average. Electronics production continued to fall in February, dropping at a faster rate of 21.6% on year compared with a revised 12.7% decline the previous month. The board also attributed this to the shutdown of production plants during the Lunar New Year period. Output of data storage equipment bucked the trend in the electronics subsector, rising 17.5% year-on-year compared with a 38.8% rise in January, with the increase led by production of high performance disk drives. Output from the biomedical sciences sector, which tends to vary from month to month, rose 29.2% in February after having more than tripled in January in percentage terms. Within the sector, production of pharmaceuticals and medical devices both rose but by a smaller margin compared with the previous month. Output of pharmaceuticals rose 33.2% in February after a fourfold increase in percentage terms in January, while medical devices rose 9.2% on-year compared with a 44.5% increase the month before. The board's monthly index of industrial production covers all manufacturing activities except rubber processing and granite quarrying. -By Izham Ahmad, Dow Jones Newswires; 65-64154-157; izham.ahmad@dowjones.com (END) Dow Jones Newswires 26-03-02 0541GMT DJ info: N/CMD,N/DJCS,N/DJWI,N/IEI FSN57595 CO ECONOMY FINANCIAL 2002-03-26 05:41:10 UTC
