I don't know what histories you're reading, to call the riots of 1929 "spontaneous", when it was clearly arranged by the Mufti's men, and was so judged by the British. Muslims are paranoid about the Dome of the Rock at all times (they never let archaeologists near it in the nineteenth century), so nothing was easier than spreading the rumor that the Jews were planning to destroy it. That doesn't make the ensuing riots spontaneous.
