First thing I'd do is go to msconfig and see if any scanner utilities are loading at the start. I no longer have my HP but if I remember correctly stimon and a couple of other scanner utils have to be removed. Remember which ones you disable (uncheck) if you plan on using them later. Your scanner will not operate without them.
