I agree there should be a distinction between the op-ed page and news page, but news can be described in such a way that it doesn't sound like they're talking to morons.

BTW, I found the link to the Paul Trummel story on Moira Breen's weblog. Her comments are worth posting.

DEPT. OF HACK LICENSING. Patrick Nielsen Hayden's comments on the widely hammered Alterman anti-Sullivan article are worth reading. He discusses Alterman's views in light of the case of Paul Trummel in Seattle, who apparently has been jailed, not for libel, but for "publishing stuff while not a credentialed journalist".

I say "apparently" because I'm not going to take the Seattle Weekly's word for it. I need more information. But wait - isn't Rick Anderson, the author of the piece, a paid professional journalist? Should I not therefore be confident of what he presents? Confident that he is disinterested, well-edited, his article free of references to his toilet, his ass thoroughly fact-checked? Surely here I can suspend the critical judgment I bring to reading my fellow bloggers?
