No, that was my 18th birthday. Fighting in "a cause" appealed to my young romaticism, plus the fact that a friend got blown up while driving a jeep on the perimeter. Also, I had more respect for the Israeli culture, intelligence and toughness than what little I knew about the Arabs.

I left Israel because I wished to fight for my family, country, and a decent way of life. The cause in the M.E. meet none of those criteria. I'm not sure how I would feel if I were Jewish, or Islamic, but that's beside the point. We do not have the answers to their problems, and only make them worse by profiteering from them.

Moore does have a good sense of the ridiculous, and thinks for himself. In his anti-Bush rant he criticized Gore as well, for being a weenie, even if he is a better human being.

You may be right about Goldwater and Vietnam, in the "only Nixon could have gone to China" sense. Goldwater was more of an individualist than his campaign rhetoric claimed.
