OT: Mary, that does sound brutal. But sometimes the best way to learn to stay away from a hot stove is to get burned once, so to speak. I'll bet every time you had the ball kids learned to run for cover (g).

I recall we played something known as "German Dodgeball". Instead of one big free-for-all, we divided into two teams, each team relegated to their side of a line that divided the gym in half. The safety precaution here obviously was that if you dove for the ball and someone else got it, being on the same team, you didn't have to worry about being an easy target. The rest of the rules were the same.

I'd say our most vicious sport was indoor field hockey. Not only did you have to contend with other kids carrying sticks, you also had to worry about being checked into the wall, by accident of course, when someone else was challenging you for the puck. However, I'll bet more kids got hurt on gymnastics days -- an individual sport -- then on all the other days combined.
