Bear, our school system had an organized way for certain kids to beat up on others. It was called recess.

We called the game "Battleball."

Two teams, six textured-red-rubber balls of different sizes ranging from a little bigger than a basketball to about the size of a softball. The rules were simple. If you are hit anywhere, you're out. If you catch the ball, the thrower is out. If you are holding a ball, you may use it to deflect a thrown ball.

The game, played in the school gymnasium, was divided into three periods. In the first period, neither team was permitted to cross the center court line. The timid could retreat to the padded wall behind the basketball backboard and have plenty of time to avoid all but the fasted throws. The gym teacher's whistle signaled the start of the second period, where one was now allowed to advance to the 3-point line. The meek were only too happy to be clipped in the leg during this period, because you didn't want to be stuck without a shield ball when the teacher blew the whistle for the start of the final period. In the last period, teams could advance to the free throw line.

Generally, at this point there would be less than a handful left on either team, each consisting of one or two of the best players, and one or two of the worst. Any uncoordinated girl left was certain to receive the small-heavy ball at full speed smacking against the side of her head. Bloody noses, tears, trips to the nurses office -- all daily events.

For most of us, it was the highlight of the day.
