How far would such a society let people fall?

Society would let them fall to whatever level society was willing to help them, as it does now. It's just the the government wouldn't be deciding who gets helped and by how much, people would be. You write your check to the United Way or your church or even to your community government rather than to the IRS. Paternalism sucks. Starvation sucks. We can do nicely without both.
