Re: "Z, what have the Israelis done to deserve the West's largesse?"

Ted, I think it had something to do with the way Europe and the West turned a "blind-eye" during the Holocaust. The state of Israel was established with the commitment from the West that another "Holocaust" would NOT be allowed to happen again.

Yousef, throughout history, millions of people, usually from one race or religion or culture have been slaughtered by crazed rulers. In most cases, the world has been slow to intervene, if it intervenes at all. Right now, in Ethiopia or the Sudan, thousands are killed every week in some kind of civil war genocide. Yugoslavia is another recent example where religious genocide was practiced until the UN ceasefire was imposed.

Yet,in those or other cases, I do not know of a whole country being given to the people who were killed and facing extermination. I am not saying giving the Jews Israel was wrong but you make it sound like it was some kind of divine right, or a forgone conclusion since so many died during the Holocaust. I do think you are right that guilt was the motivator but that doesn't make the Jews more deserving than others who have or are going through similar circumstances.

Re: "The Arabs/Muslims make up 1/3 of this world ..."

Great statistic Ted ... Only problem is that the majority of them don't even reside in the Mideast. (Largest muslim nation is Indonesia (~300million).

First, who said that the West's concern should be only for the Arab/Muslims located in the Middle East? Secondly, current estimates of the world's Muslim population place it at over 1 billion....therefore, coupled with the Arab non Muslim population, Indonesia's Muslims are hardly a majority. FWIW.

Yousef, now this is how stupid it is getting. Sharon has told Arafat that if he goes to Beirut for the peace summit and there is any terrorism in his absence, he may not be allowed back into Palestine.

No matter how much Arafat is in league with the terrorists, I don't think anyone thinks he is in total control of them. Consequently, he is not attending the peace summit in which the main topic of conversation is to discuss the Saudi peace plan for Israel/Palestine. Worse........the Egyptian prime minister now also does not plan to attend.

Now how effective do you think these peace talks will be? Sharon truly is out of control and becomes less effective each day.....
