That is an unfortunate accident and yes, a life-jacket probably would have saved that man's life. Also, scouting the river better to know about possible dangers ahead. That's why, as I mentioned some time back on this thread, I almost always paddle upstream and then back downstream, when I put my canoe into a river I've never paddled on before. That pretty much keeps you out of trouble. I wear a life jacket a lot of the time, but not always.. (yes, bad, eh?). If I'm on fast-moving water, or paddling in deep rivers, or anywhere where there are motor boats, I always wear one. However, almost all of my canoe-tripping is on small, shallow creeks or in marshes, and as I swim like an otter, the risk of an accident isn't particularly high...and when it comes down to it.. I'm a pretty careful old crocodile.. ;-}>

Bad idea. Kayaking without flotation, and
anywhere near a low-head dam is asking for trouble.
Probably went over the weir and got maytagged.
