" Suspend inflation via trade deficit". Good point. Politicians and economists used to talk about how bad the
balance of trade was, and how we have to correct it. It's been a loooooooooooong time since I have heard it discussed, or even mentioned. I was beginning to wonder if it even mattered anymore. I also think the political theme one election cycle was that "We have to end the deficit and pay down the debt, cuz we don't want to pass it on to our kids". Beginning about the time that the deficit was starting to decline, nobody mentioned it again.

It's easy to see on a micro level, like when it is your own household budget. Not too many people would be pleased if they had even one year in which they spent more than they brought in. Or maybe I am wrong about that, given the level of consumer debt. Maybe they don't care, even about paying interest. Maybe they don't see bankruptcy as a negative. I dunno. I woke up on 1/1 ought one with a newly arrived 16K debt behind my divorce. It totally pained me that I was going to have to go 6 sleepless nights over just the next year in order to pay off just the interest. (Also got me to wondering...these folks want me to use their money; they advertise to get me to use their money. So why don't they PAY me to use their money? What a wonderful world that would be). Anyway, I had no life, but I paid it off in 14 months.
