I realize that is a rhetorical question intended to point out the unknowns but that was my point also. Why didn't you ask him how he knew the Tbird was cheaper to manufacture?

Yes, it was. And since there are so many unknown variables that go into figuring out the cost to produce a single CPU, it doesn't make much sense to say CPU A costs less to produce than CPU B.

Well, in extreme cases, such as coppermine Celeron vs. Cascades or Merced, it is fairly safe to make such a claim.

Anyway, another problem in figuring out the cost to produce a single CPU would be what approach to use (even if all of the unknowns were known), how to allocate all the expenses that are necessary to make a CPU.
