China Unicom Ltd., China's second biggest mobile-phone company, said its full year 2001 profit surged 37.8 percent, driven by the rapid expansion of its GSM cellular business.

Subscribers for the firm's global system for mobile (GSM) service rose 111.7 percent year-on-year to 27.03 million at end-December, boosting its 2001 net profit to 4.46 billion yuan (537 million dollars) from 3.23 billion yuan a year earlier.

Analysts had predicted a net profit of 4.20-4.63 billion yuan, according to a poll by AFP's financial subsidiary AFX-Asia.

China Unicom said in a statement that sales rose to 29.39 billion yuan from 23.69 billion yuan.

Its operating profit rose slightly to 5.26 billion yuan from 5.22. The firm announced earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation of 13.53 billion yuan compared to 10.96 billion a year earlier.

The revenue share from the cellular business increased substantially to 72.5 percent in 2001 from 54.4 percent in 2000, it said.
