<< spare us. everyone likes clean renewable energy sources. some of us are just realistic enough to understand that it is not a near-term solution. >>

Really? Perhaps you and Cheney need to be ejacated as Bush likes to say. Wind can be deployed much more rapidly than the coal plants that he lusts over.

"Turbines in the UK currently generate 475MW, equivalent to the average annual electricity consumption of 330,000 households, or every home in Norfolk, while displacing the emissions of one and a quarter million tonnes of carbon dioxide. 2002 will be the single most successful year for the UK wind industry with a confirmed 40% increase in generation capacity. A total of 15 new projects are confirmed for construction in 2002, making this the single most succesful year for the UK wind power industry. Just under 200MW of new wind power capacity will increase generation capacity by over 40%, but the industry still has a long way to go to meet government targets on renewable energy.

Worldwide, 2001 saw more than 6,000MW of new wind power plant added with total global capacity now standing at 24,000MW.

By comparison, 1,748MW of new nuclear capacity was connected to grids worldwide, making this the third year in a row, 1999, 2000 and 2001, where more wind power has been installed than nuclear installed."

It's heartening to see that there is real progress on the energy front by other world leaders. Ours are still dreaming about clean coal, which is mainly carbon. There is no way to burn it clean unless you don't consider CO2 a pollutant. Bush did while he was campaigning, and then reneged later, like he did on so many other issues.
