BTW, I don't remember a lot from last night. did I mention to you a plane at the local airport slid off the runway about 10PM. Almost bridged itself over a min rod. Happened bout 5 years ago. During the day though, I was there right as it happoened. Had my Nikon FM 35 mm handy. jumped out smapped a roll of film. Developed the begs myself, made a proof at a fiends house got two of my shots in the local newspaper. Got credits for it, but no cash. Not evebn and offer to be a press photograpger, Huh!

Raku kiln notes:

Just found this discussion posted on an old potters.org thread -- wanted to save these comments for inspiration.
Found here: potters.org

Q:: If you know of good sources for designs on Wood-fired Raku Kilns then please let me know...

A. # 1:: I designed a half Japanese/half fiber lined barrel raku kiln wood fired that we used for years until the campus remodeled the kiln site. I built another one until they remodeled grounds for a sculpture garden. The mouth of the fire box faced west for the dominant wind. Fire boxe was about 4 ' long with rebar support for wood (used split 2x4 scrap). We'd fire all day for classes, and once we got going it was fast. Clocked a 3.5 minute firng once! The barrel was lifted by two folks on cables while another pulled the pots and another smoked the can. Interested?
-----
A # 2:: I wrote an article complete with diagrams and formula for a cast Raku kiln. It can be found in the September 1977 CM. The kiln is designed to fire with sawdust but will get to raku temps with wood stoked into the large stoke hole. This is an adaptation of the Roman kiln. You might have to add a little air from a small squirrel cage blower to get a good clean fire. The Romans used bellows.
As a way to teach firing, I have assigned students to build a small kiln and fire it with sticks and grass. The objective is to reach cone 08. It can be done and students appreciate more fully how temperature is achieved. A digital pyrometer will let you know exactly what is happening with your every move, wood burning speaking.

Well, the pics of the plane off the runway didn't turn out at all. Out of like 15 shorts, you could make out the plane in one of them. And at that, unless you are familiar with the airport, you wouldn't be able to tell it was only about 15 feet from sliding onto(or above the road). Last time (I think the only time) that did happen, it went over with such force tht instead of the nose dropping down the 20 or so feet into the street, it formed a bridge over the street to the other side. That was during the afternoon and was quite the scene - I have shots of that one somewhere.

You know, I should have taken my 35mm Nikon FM. I bet with some high speed B&W film, I could have gotten a few good shots.

So it has warmed here over night aand is now in the low 40s. Snow is 80% gone once again aand I'm really hoping this is the end of it!.
