Your 80% market share "rule" seems obvious upon reflection.
The only markets I can think of right off with 80% shares for IBM are mainframes and SiGe. Both have viable alternatives, but price is not the primary competitive issue. Both resulted from IP, long experience and synergies with related technologies. These advantages are being leveraged across many of IBM's product portfolios. Many of Big Blue's competitors can only dream having similar breadth and IP. Many fault IBM's lack of revenue growth while praising competitors whose market share and revenue are dropping precipitously. Meanwhile these competitors are trying to be "more like IBM". Go figure.
